| We
begin with the understanding that we each come into the world with our
own built-in preferences to behave in particular ways. As we say in
Raising CuddleBugs "Temperament is real, measurable and tied to
quantifiable events in our bodies, minds and genes."
What
does that mean for parents?
It means that
every parent and child twosome is a unique event. While we can describe
good approaches to parenting in a general way for all parent/child
combinations, mutual success for parent and child also depends on
recognizing, accepting, and working with these unique qualities that
exist in both parent and child.
A
major flaw in most parenting advice is the assumption that one child is
much like another (at least at the beginning) and one parent is much
like another (or differs only in caring and effort). Instead, the
unique and highly individualized temperament of the child makes a world
of difference in how that child learns and socializes, how he or she
responds to discipline, learns self control, reasons, and makes
decisions about life. Parent temperament, in turn, has a profound
influence on actual parenting style, no matter what theoretical model
the parent follows.
