All through this book, we have been
telling you that there are large differences in the way that
children think and feel and behave that are normal, and need to be
understood and accepted. We have also tried to stress that our
scales are not designed to measure abnormal behavior. However,
beyond the upper limits of normal behavior, there are many genuine
mental disorders that do occur in children. Knowing where normal
behavior leaves off and serious problems begin is a very difficult
thing for any parent. Imagining medical and psychological problems
that do not exist is quite common—especially after reading about
them! On the other hand, ignoring a more serious problem as simply a
temperament issue could be a great mistake. Anytime you have
continuing doubts, the appropriate response is to look for
professional help and advice. Below we give you descriptions of some
of the more common (and a few not-so-common) disorders to think
about. Following that, we have provided a fairly extensive list of
both Internet and book references on these topics. |
